If you have read the Muse you know I've already raved about the power of Intimacy at Copley and across the US for lingerie - Now, unfortunately the price tag is a bit sticky - 80-150 for Bras and upwards of 60 smacks for a pair of underwear - now for a former Hanes her Way lady that is a tough bill to swallow especially when it is underneath your clothes!

SO - I couldn't have been more elated to find one of the premier brands, Chantelle, at TJ Maxx the other night - now I'll be honest you have to dig, but the prices are much more in line with Muse's standards - $15 for Bras and $3 for underwear - are you kidding me!!!! I saved over 350 smacks at one go!

I cannot believe I'm sharing this secret - but after seeing Chantelle on Rue La La for a still whopping $29-100 I knew it was too good not to...

Farewell to Nancy Talbot

Growing up partly on the South Shore in Hingham, I have known about the Bright Red Door since before I knew what it symbolized. At the time, it meant having to go with my mom to a boring store with no toys or fun things to do, but as I grew older I understood what it meant to not only a community but to women - classic and practical styles.

Over the years the styles changed and so did the designers - most recently Michael Smallbone has created a cooler style to appeal to a wider demographic, but one thing remained the same - the Bright Red Door and the name.

Sunday, Nancy Talbot, passed away. The Boston Globe wrote a wonderful and inspirational piece about her work and the families launch to success. It is worth the read.

Back to School Fashion

After a long summer hiatus - the Style Muse is back and ready to get down to business! I'm glad to see that in my time away not too much has changed - miraculously one-shoulders are still in, black&white, and animals are circling the subway - you know the drill.

But there are subtle differences to the upcoming season as there are every season, which require us to update our wardrobes and pick key pieces to keep us looking fresh and feeling better. So, after trying my best to show restraint shopping this summer, I can indulge in so much needed retail therapy without the guilt!

Even if it has been some time since we have stepped foot in a classroom, we can still remember what it was like to get the mail with our new teacher, class list or syllabus, buying our back-to-school pencil box and matching bowl cut (wait was that just me?). Even if the clock restarts on January 1 for many of us it will always be September with the changing air and feeling that you have a new start - so to that end I'll be scouring the sales and new trends to find the best deals to put your best foot forward this season.

As a start, here's a skirt that I found that will not break the bank but fulfill the much needed animal print for the season. For those of you like Sister Muse 2 that can't see themselves in such a print, try incorporating the spotted trend in small ways such as shoes (flats, pumps, but please not boots) or a skinny belt, handbag etc.

Go gett'em tiger (or leopard or zebra)...

Skinny Style

I'm always looking for new places to get fun and unique items to spice up my wardrobe, especially items that don't break the bank. I was perusing some magazine in the airport yesterday and came across this site, Skinny Style and I love it! They have great little pieces to complement your summer wardrobe - and you know anything coral, turquoise, or gold and I'm already there! I really love this unusual bracelet!

If you aren't into buying online, they have a list of stores that carry it, such as Flat of the Hill in Boston as well.

The quality is no doubt rich, and for many can mantain a staple item - but for me it feels more like whimsy, so I was really excited to stumble upon a similar looking moc for $19 smacks!

I cannot tell you the last time I went into a Bebe - maybe briefly in 2000? I've always figured it is for Eva Longoria types, both in terms of style and size. So I was taken by surprise when I found myself wandering through this week, some unexpected pull weaving me through the slightly slutty attire. But lo and behold - I found myself openly grinning (by myself) at many of the whimsical tops and dresses that would make Carrie Bradshaw squeal with delight. Mind you, like SATC, these are not for the faint of heart, but if you're looking to go out on a limb, this is the place to do it - feathers, ruffles and bows oh my!

Remember how you felt wearing a boa around the house as a kid (wait was that only me?) Well this is the grown-up version - be bold, be daring and smile confidently knowing how bad-ass you are wearing one of these shirts. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

I'm in Love with Isaac and Liz

Usually when I flip through O Magazine I go fairly quickly through the fashion - frequently I think it is better suited for, well, for someone else. But yesterday, I was looking at the newest issue and was floored then ecstatic - Isaac Mizrahi has done it again! This time partnering with the decrepit line, Liz Claiborne.

I'm sure most of us haven't paid Liz Claiborne a second thought since the early 80s, if at all. But I think it is back and in a big way. I'm over the moon for the new line with Isaac. It is fresh, with vibrant colors and familiar prints that remind me of Mad Men and a time when women could be women.

It says spring 2009 - so I'm dying to know when I can get it! I plan to start saving my pennies now for a few spring essentials like the pink gingham skirt or the sailor outfit or the rattan clutch. OK, so maybe that it is more than a few pennies, but almost everything is under $200. The line is carried at a few venues including Macy's, check it out.

Old School Glamour, by way of Jewelry

Old School earrings are back - I'll admit, I first started paying attention to the elegant Jackie-O type earrings because Sister Muse 2 was not giving me much of a choice - Every time, Lily sported them on Gossip Girl I heard about it. And judging by this year's Golden Globes, she was dead-on. BTW - My vote for Best Dressed all around goes to Olivia Wilde, simply stunning, but I digress...

Glamorous baubles adorned the ears of many of the starlets, channelling Old Hollywood, simple in their styles (think flowered, crystal studs) these earrings emanate grace and class (which says Sister Muse 2 all over it). So, for Christmas I thought I'd found the perfect gift! But alas, the stores haven't quite caught on to the phenom and I couldn't find suitable baubles anywhere. *My guess is, they will be hitting stores this spring and into next fall (I mean who would've guessed that Jumpsuits are still coming in with even more vigor?)

Well, thanks to Sister Muse 2's perseverance, this story has a happy ending for her and hopefully for you too! The quick fix is to visit consignment shops and antique stores to look for interesting costume jewelry. You don't like clip-ons you say? Do not despair, though frequently these earrings are clip-on, just take it to a local jeweler and have them replace with posts which will run about $10.

Voila - you are now ahead of the curve with your vintage finds - A big thank you to Sister Muse 2.

Investing in Classics During a Recession

Now it is getting interesting...The bubble has burst and no matter where you look there are reminders of the economic turmoil facing our nation; including a heavy emphasis on fashion. The stories are everywhere - the elite shopping in private so as not to appear uncouth. Or designers such as Vera Wang, Carmen Marc Valvo and Betsey Johnson cancelling their fashion show or severely cutting back. The period of excess is over. It is no longer trendy to show off your ridiculously expensive purchases, and bragging rights over addresses, vacations and clothing are so passe.

While in some ways this makes it more difficult to be a style muse in other ways it is a huge sigh of relief. It is a welcome realization in my life to understand that I do not need to have so much (clothes or anything else) especially when others have so little. And before anyone thinks I've gone completely George Bailey - my stripes haven't changed all that much. I still believe in fashion and in representing yourself and your spirit through personal style.

But, as a culture, we will embrace a new way of living, at least this is my hope. It is the old adage of quality over quantity. Personally, my goal is to think French in 2009 -- meaning invest in a few necessary items now that are durable, classic and even luxurious and wear them with the quiet grace that is befitting of this period: a winter of stoic sensibility.

So while it may seem counter intuitive, now is in fact a time to buy. As a recent article by David Coleman in the NYT pointed out, luxury [read: quality] has never been so affordable. Now for people like me, that does not mean just because Manolo Blahnik's are marked down to $175 that you need to buy them - What it does mean is that you think about your needs and purchase wisely, sometimes for as much as 50% off - Saks in particular is having some great deals at the moment.

Look inside your closet - what is worn out? what is lacking? and make a list and buy only from that list. For example, The Muse is looking for a winter dress coat that will last an innumerable number of seasons and possibly a some black cashmere to add to the chest. But will not, repeat will not, succumb, no matter how inexpensive, to buying any sequins.

Holiday Party Dressing Part I: The Company Christmas Party

'Tis the season...for sequins and lace and fur, faux if you prefer! My favorite time of year, throw some metallic my way and I'll be dancing in the street. However, Muse does understand certain occasions require a fair amount of clothing restraint a la the company holiday party -- but don't fret, there is a holiday outfit for everyone and every occasion. A few to start off with...

The company holiday party:

Remain understated, do not see this as an opportunity to display parts of your personality or anatomy that you wouldn't normally want your boss to see. This issue is only exacerbated by drinking too much and really making a fool of yourself. That said, there is no reason to be a stick in the fondue. Play up the festive with fabrics, a pop of color and/or statement accessories.

A few suggestions:

Velvet pants, cashmere sweater and dramatic earrings

Winter white pants and white or black top - layered gold necklace

Black pants, tuxedo-esque top

Knee length sequin skirt with black turtleneck

The all classic sheath dress

Lace Skirt and sweater

Places to look - Mix and Match at: The Express (I know, so college, but their holiday stuff is cute), Ann Taylor (again, I know, avoid anything to matronly), J. Crew, Club Monaco, and even Newport News (I love this dress in the photo).

And Please Remember -- no pantyhose - never, don't do it, if we stop buying them, eventually they will stop making them and the resistant will have no choice but to get on board.

First Lady Style

The frenzy has died down a bit today, and now I can turn my attention to the "dress" that Michelle Obama wore election night. Shockingly, the Muse didn't see this as the most important issue of the evening. In fact, I don't think it enters top 10 or more. There is so much to discuss, so much change, but this is indeed a blog on style, so I will not focus on the politics of the evening but rather what the next first lady will demonstrate in terms of style. And even though the Muse is an ardent feminist, I can still get down with wanting a first lady (or first female President) to have the style and grace of Jackie O.

As the Obamas prepare to journey to the White House the comparisons to Camelot are plenty and rightly so. Michelle Obama is young, vibrant and beautiful and I think that we'll see four years of grace and style (I hope).

That said, she didn't get it right on election night. Yes, kudos to her for choosing Narciso Rodriguez an amazing American designer, but that dress was just wrong. I believe in taking fashion risks, it is what makes fashion fun and style personal. But it is also the thing that makes us laugh looking back at old photos -- that perm, those leggings, booties! Any of our photos last a lifetime, but for the next First Lady they will have a different kind of permanence -- historical. Considering, there are museum exhibits of Jackie's Presidential style, Mrs. Obama has quite the shoes to fill to be considering in the same company.

For this reason, I believe the dress was a mistake. Aside from the unflattering fit, and unfortunate cardigan. The dress itself was bold, too bold for election night. For a night that will go down in history books. When in doubt go classic. Always. There is a reason that certain items like the Little Black Dress have surpassed the trends, they fit, they flatter and they let the woman shine through (cheesy but true). While I'm not saying she needed to wear an LBD or something so simple, all the lines, the cardigan, the colors - it was too much for such a momentous occasion.

Andre Leon Talley, the editor at large for Vogue said in an insightful NY Times piece that Michelle “is not sitting around going through fashion look books and having confabs. She is just going through her closet and picking out what’s right for her.” While I'm not one to argue with Mr. Talley -- stylist or no stylist -- someone of this stature, of this public nature, needs a second and third opinion. And we cannot just believe she didn't plan, the entire Obama family is in perfectly matched shades of red and black.

Maybe she should have a shopping date with Carla Bruni who seems to be playing the card just right these days. Regardless of her choice Tuesday, I look forward to see her choices moving forward and am excited for the Inaugural Ball gown. And I think the message for the rest of us is that for the big moments simplicity let's the moment shine through.

Design Hive

Creating a buzz for new styles

When Val Fox was in New York last year, she loved frequenting the designers markets that adorn city blocks from SoHo to Brooklyn. She especially relished finding one-of-a-kind pieces from aspiring fashion designers.

"It was just much more interesting than going into H&M and picking out something that everyone else is already wearing," said Fox, 39, an e-commerce marketing consultant from Cambridge. "I know Bostonians would love to have markets like these and we really don't have any, at least not any that are exclusively about fashion and design."

So Fox took matters into her own hands. She dialed up local design schools, including the Massachusetts College of Art & Design and the Rhode Island School of Design, and she invited them to help her create a designers market that would transcend the typical shopping experience.

The result is Design Hive, a showcase for aspiring and established designers from all over New England. Held at the Baldwin School in Cambridge every Saturday through Dec. 20, the bazaar will feature DJs and more than 40 vendors selling one-of-kind wares, including modern and vintage clothing, handbags and accessories, jewelry, housewares, and pottery.

"It's not a craft market by any means. About 80 percent of the merchandise is clothing and jewelry that is fashion-forward and edgy," Fox said. "At the same time, it's very grassroots, democratic and accessible."

Her blueprint for the Design Hive was based on The Market, a wildly successful designers' market in the Nolita neighborhood of Manhattan. Every Saturday since September 2002, The Market has transformed a local gym into a colorful bazaar where talented, yet-to-be discovered designers showcase their latest styles.

"The Market is held in a gym, the Design Hive is in a school cafeteria, so it'll have a similar feel to it," Fox said. "We'll feature about 100 different designers spread over the eight Saturdays that are either unknown or little known. It's really a platform for people who are just getting started in the world of design."

Fox sees it as a great opportunity to catch a rising star early in their career - sort of like seeing U2 at the Paradise before they started selling out arenas. "You could discover the next Luella Bartley or Anya Hindmarch," Fox said. "And you could be among the first to check out their styles before they get picked up and go big box on us."

Ten Pounds Lighter

I know, I know, the instant cure, you've heard it before. Unfortunately besides diet and exercise there is little one can do....but!!! Dressing for your shape and size is always the first step in appearing thinner and with the shape you want. You've all heard the adage wear the size you are, not the size you want to be - i know that can be difficult especially when you finally can squeeze into your high school jeans etc. Why do I bring this up? A colleague reminded that I need to get her the name of my secret weapon, and I can't believe I haven't written about it yet.

You may have heard it mentioned on Oprah and an array of women's magazines about the perfect bra -- thinking that you have to go to NYC like every other fashion necessity...but alas no more, head over to Copley Plaza (if you're in Boston) and make an appointment (857) 277-7887 or look it up when you are in Atlanta, Chicago, NYC, Miami and Houston. The name of the store is Intimacy and they are the "Bra Fit Specialists" which is very important especially as 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra!

Wearing the right size bra can seriously change the shape of your entire torso, for the better. And we're not talking about Victoria Secret fittings, or even Nordstrom -- it is not for the faint of heart. These women will completely bring you out of your comfort zone prodding and peering at women's vulnerable assets...but in the end they will find a bra that no only makes you look better but relieves the pressure and will keep your assets perkier longer.

I will warn you, that the price tag is a bit heftier than the average bra you'll find, but the results are truly worth it. You'll look and feel better in everything you wear.

Because I'm Worth It...And So Are You

The concept of spa days, massages, facials etc. is one of endless curiosity to me -- even the mention of the words creates a wafting overflow of indulgence, frivolity and privilege. And it is true, these things are above the things we need certainly, but when I think of the latest tech gadget or even bracelet or item of clothing that we buy on a whim it doesn't seem more or less of an indulgence. In fact, you are indulging in an item with the highest ROI -- yourself! Even in this tough economic climate where people are cutting back on some of the more frivolous items, many of the beauty services are still holding on, perhaps even because of the tough times, as a way to alleviate the lacking confidence in America and in themselves etc. The Boston Globe wrote a great piece on what people will give up to keep their beauty indulgences and it had me thinking what I'd given up or gone without.

I often swap out services and wait too long to get my hair touched up, but when I succumb to the earthly pleasure of a luxurious facial or massage I wonder that same thing almost without fail -- Why Am I Not Doing This More Often? Why Am I Not Investing In Myself? There are a multitude of answers and while mostly it does come down to $$$ it also is a lot of work, time and energy, no matter how good the end result. But it IS worth it in the long run. And sometimes it just takes time to remember that.

And I'm a firm believer that everyone should have this experience. While you can make do with the DIY type grooming of manicures and pedicures, the simple indulgence of reminding yourself you're worth it, is worth the associated price tag. For this reason I'm always thrilled when Spa week comes around, for $50 you can check out amazing services at the best Spas in town for a fraction of the cost and rejuvenate. I headed to Bella Sante on Newbury Street for the Golden Veil Facial -- complete with Frankincense and Myrrh. Aside from feeling a bit like the three wise men by the time I headed out...I also felt absolutely wonderful! And again reprimanded myself for not indulging just a bit more often (and feeling a tad bad about not reminding friends of the Muse to check out Spa Week for themselves) Then as I was leaving I was given another gift by the wise men -- Bella Sante has extended Spa Week for the Month of October -- Oh Joy!!! So go and rejoice in your wonderful, beautiful life and forget about the crummy economy for say, an hour....

The collection is filled with the qualities we've come to know and love by the designer, like simple embellishments that give a rocker edge to a delicate flat. Now you can have SM for a fraction of the price. I hear it is already selling out everywhere, so grab'em up before its too late!!!

How to Have Style

Isaac Mizrahi although kooky is pretty genius or maybe because he is kooky is genius...He brought style to the masses with his simple collection for Target and now has published the book "How to Have Style." While I have not read it yet, I did read an excerpt and am already sold! He stresses that you should always dress as if you have a crush -- I love it!! because it is so true -- when i think back to high school or college and the countless crushes I had, I'm reminded of the way I dressed when I knew there was a possibility of their presence. [sigh] Now I work with 80 chicks and sadly have no crush in my daily routine, but the trick is to his statement is the as if -- Give yourself the subtle mind trick needed to put that extra effort into your choices in the morning and who knows, you may just end up having a little crush on yourself!

Bloody Fantastic

Edgy, trendy, and channeling Kate Moss are not the words I typically use when thinking about fashion, and especially not when thinking of splurges, but that is one more thing that makes the introduction of Top Shop so bloody fantastic!

Although it has been around since the 60's, the United States has only recently been introduced to the brand with the opening of the New York flagship store last year. But now all can enjoy the edgy trends with the launch of the Website.

With funky, up-to-the-minute lines such as the eponymous collection by Kate Moss, and at affordable prices, everyone can now enjoy some of the UK rocker edge.

I'm lusting after a wool blazer that hasn't come out yet, but here are a few other pieces that make a statement without developing multiple personalities...

Channel the 60's with this tartan taffeta blouse pair with "smart" cigarette pants and ballet flats.

I love this pencil skirt with the perfect ruffle accent capitalizing on a hot trend, the zipper in the back makes this one vixen-worthy.

And the belt, oh the belt...Because you can, and should...

Emmy's Fashion

I have to admit that for the first time in probably my adult life, not only did I not watch the Emmy's I didn't even know they were on! I was however, eating up the fashion reviews this morning on the news and online...The Today Show said that Ms. Lauren Conrad's dress (that she designed) lacked the same Charisma she did, ouch! I love it the claws are out...

Another interesting point the commentator made was that fear of misstepping caused many of the starlets to go on the safe side with simple and strapless old glamour. There were few glaring faux pas that I noticed from the coverage today, but maybe I missed something.

My favorites were Olivia Wilde, she looked regal and beautiful, Christina Applegate daring and bold with an "I am woman hear me roar" attitude, and Kyra Sedgewick for her vixen, Jessica Rabbit ensemble...

You almost have to remind yourself that they have an entire team helping them look that good!!

Falling for Boots

As the temps cool my mind heats up thinking of soft cashmere, delicious sweaters with billowing necks, tweeds and the return of boots! to name a few...

A friend recently inquired (OK not sooo recently but work has been busy) what boots to invest in this fall. So I looked around and am happy to report classic is still classic! ha, and when you are spending a good chunk of money this is a very good thing!

Of course we'd all love to spend innumerable amounts of money on the newest Dior Jazz boot but you can find a solid, well-made classic for far less. My favorites are Cole Haan and Coach for well-made, classic styles...I've had a pair since 2004 from Coach and they could easily pass for this season.

What to Look For: a slightly rounded toe, medium heel (or stiletto if you're brave), luxe leather or suede with detailing but keep it subtle. Of course, riding boots are not only practical but timeless, and as much as I resisted the ankle boot is turning into a staying trend, so if you're brave go for it!!!

Times Are Tough

Maybe I just feel the need to make excuses for my lack of writing, but I will echo what many already know...Times are tough!

It seems that in addition to college loans and home foreclosures the "maybe-recession" has hit the department stores!!! Aghhhh. While it may have been a good thing for my wallet to go without, it has been a little bit more difficult for my sanity and for this blog.

So, I've decided to talk about where you can find good deals still (and they aren't always where you think).

Let's start with J. Crew -- Used to be I'd get excited just thinking about a trip to the outlets, for many reasons, but the J. Crew outlet in particular has long been a fan fave --until recently. Gone are days when I scored a cashmere sweater for $30!!! Now it is Hello $90 pants! WHAT? Even if I love the item and would pay full price in the store, don't insult me by putting that price tag in a J. Crew outlet. It is a matter of principle, but I just won't do it.

Now, what is interesting is if you head to an actual J. Crew store at the right time (which was about 2 weeks ago) and you could score a great linen blazer for $35 over 75% off! but don't be fooled into thinking the prices are the same everywhere, I've seen to frequently higher prices online or in differing stores. Moral of the story, shop around. (Or better yet, let me do it for you).

And this is a great time to do it with the change from summer to fall clothes in the stores. As you've probably heard before, it is smart to buy clothes at the end of the season on sale to put away -- but when your mouth begins to salivate (as mine does) for the mix of chunky knits and fall tweeds it can be hard to see ahead -- not to mention how will you even know what will be in style a whole year from now!! Well, these are respectable worries, but buying a few classic pieces could pay dividends next year or even this winter. Don't get me started on the Burberry cashmere coat Sister Muse 2 got at the outlet in Freeport for $200!!!! BTW, for those heading to Maine for a last summer hurrah -- make sure to hit up the outlets, Burberry has now turned into a clearance house and some of the prices are out of this world!! After you work up an appetite, head to Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster for some delish food and views of Maine that can't be beat!

OK I clearly digress, because Lobster doesn't really go with the "times are tough theme" -- but with all the money you're saving....

My point is to be creative -- First off, look to your wardrobe, what do you have that can be re-purposed? What do you need to create a fresh new look? Then shop around. Look for sales...I have a friend that swears by eBay for jeans! I definitely think for jewelry, bags and sunglasses its a go! Go to the nearest ritzy suburb and look in consignment shops where the desperate housewives bring their lightly worn belongings...

And as I always say, mix and match, high and low = no one will ever know!! So don't forget JC Penney, Target, and the long forgotten Gap!!!

What I'm Loving Now: The Jumpsuit

I've been searching for a reasonably priced jumpsuit that doesn't look trashy or risque and surprisingly even though they are sprinkling the red-carpets they are few and far between in actual stores. While I'm not expecting J. Crew to bust out with a black catsuit, was sort of hoping someplace would have a moderately priced jumpsuit.

This isn't the first time I've wanted something that has been hard to find, I've been searching for years for a pair of sleek leather pants a la Gwyneth on Oprah years ago. And no, the jean style that was in at the Gap doesn't count. Anyway, it has made me realized the gap between what we see in the magazines, runways, and on our favorite stars and what we can find in stores is large. And the more a trend hits mass-retail the better chance we the consumers have of finding the trend that can fit our needs.

Now I'll admit that my love of the jumpsuit came back to me full-force after seeing Carrie at her engagement party with a fierce strapless black jumpsuit dripping in gold jewels and roaring belt, but it wasn't the first time. There is something so sexy and kick-ass about a jumpsuit, so Studio 54 meets Catwoman and I love it!

The Muse would be ever so grateful to someone that can help her obtain the long awaited jumpsuit or leather pants!!!

Making SATC Proud

I get it, I’m terrible, I've been very remiss in posting and I have no good excuse as to why! Perhaps I was saving up for the Sex in the City Movie!!! No worries, I won't write any spoilers and to be honest, the plot was secondary to the clothes anyway!!!

Anyone that watches the show, knows the clothes are principal to the plot and act as a 5th or 6th (if you factor in NYC) character. Though it felt a bit over the top in the movie, I'm all over it! Most of the ensembles the women wear I wouldn't dream of wearing, but in the same way that they revolutionized the idea of being female and single in the city, Patricia Field and SJP created a wonderful sense of freedom to the fashion we wear. On the one hand they introduced us to the impossibly expensive shoes of Manolo and the coveted bag of next season, but on the other they showed us real city dwellers that it is absolutely fine to throw caution to the wind, on occasion.

More than once, I've stood in front of my mirror thinking, jeez, can I really get away with wearing this? Isn't it too bold? Too sleazy? Too demure? Too much?

When I have these moments of doubt I only need to think of Samantha’s choices and think, if it floats my boat why not??? What exactly am I afraid of? Making a fashion faux pas? If we didn't experiment and enjoy the sometimes perilous trends where would our individual style come from?

I was especially struck by the plethora of exposed bras. Personally I’ve never been a “bra-less wonder” in fact many times I’ve thought I'd love to wear this, but I couldn't wear a bra, and with a sigh of defeat walk away. The SATC ladies simply rock it like they mean it and while I don’t necessarily care for this style, I applaud the fact that they did! Everything from their bras, to color choices and mix of style and texture was simply outrageous!

To that end, recently I’ve heard a lot of mumblings on the present day dilemma of matching? It goes kind of like this, "OK, so I don't want to match?" with a one-eyed tilt of the head, trying to grasp the fact that after 20 or 30 years everything we’d been taught about matching was in fact wrong? I won’t throw the universe off of its course and say that matching is a no-no, but I think we have to be conscious of overkill and looking like an overgrown 3rd grader...And I say 3rd grader, because before that, I think most of us were just lucky to be dressed. I spent much of pre-school in cowboy boots and a red t-shirt. I preferred to wear Easter hats with the ribbon forward, much to the chagrin of Grandmother Muse. And you know what, every picture indicates I was happy as a clam. I think so much of our lives are tied up in the details of client meetings, and budgets that we forget what it is like to color outside of the lines. When I'm in a subdued suit (rarely I admit) I feel not only uncomfortable but crushed of creativity and freedom to be me. I want to be the little girls I see with boldly colored striped tights and polka dot dresses that I look at with a mix of fondness and envy.

Who knew fashion could say so much? I'll end with the advice that next time you're wondering if you can "pull-off" an outfit think of our fashion-forward friends of SATC and go for it!

Jammie Time!

I am pretty sure it goes something like this: wake up, scrutinize over your wardrobe for a milla-second, put on the most pulled together look you can muster, roll to work where you are inevitably complimented on some portion of your outfit (dress, skirt, shoes, jewelry etc) then go home and immediately change into your jammies (or some variation therein).

For the longest time I thought this practice was something that only existed in the all-female Muse household growing up. I'd watch shows like Lipstick Jungle and think no way Lindsay Price's character wears that around the house! But my secret fear was that she DID and I was the strange one. I can remember Mother Muse changing into some pretty choice jammie attire after school and the saddest truth was that Papa Muse kind of forgot what Mother Muse looked like in real clothes. Needless to say, the apple doesn't not fall far from the tree and these habits are deep seeded in me, and I had to know -- Does everyone have Jammie Time?

I began taking a sort of subtle poll of my friends and was beyond happy to find out that YES!!! everyone does Jammie Time!!! As if some release from the confines of your day, people change into sweatpants, jammies, yoga pants, brief cotton underwear...you name it! No wonder this is such a huge market for "loungewear". If you are looking for some cute loungewear check out lululemon and Target as nice alternatives to the Juicy Couture that swept the nation a few years ago!

Who Needs Kitson!

As most everyone knows by this point -- celebrities and movies have taken over Boston! And of course, the Muse couldn't be happier! We have an influx of the best actors from Leonardo DiCaprio to Jennifer Garner. So it is no doubt that local shopkeepers are relishing the glamour stops these stars are making to our restaurants and boutiques.

As one comment mentioned our very own Crush Boutique made it into the rags as celebrities have been bopping-in including Miss Anne Hathaway! It is so nice to see Boston catching up with other cities in the fashion dept! And Crush is a great boutique aside from carrying trendy items, they know what looks good on their customers and are invested in making sure you look good for the BNO (big night out). I also think it is one of the least pretentious boutiques around.

It looks like soon enough it will be Robertson who? Baby's got a new boyfriend in town and his name is Charles ;)

Happy Earth Day

As you know, today is Earth Day!! And lucky for us it looks like we're getting better at recognizing the environment on a daily basis from the food we eat and the cars we drive.

For all you 'scuppies' (socially conscious and upwardly mobile) out there, today's Muse is for you!! With so many studies and the inundation of information -- use Nalgene, never mind the plastic is bad or the squiggle light-bulbs but watch out for the mercury!! -- It is tough to keep up!

But there is definitely something I can get behind -- eco-fashion! And there are several ways to partake. For example: if you shop from April 22-27 at Banana Republic 1% of sales go to Greener Cities. And BR has several initiatives in the queue to produce more eco-friendly lines.

Or try one of my favorite stores in NYC Te Casan which just launched a line of vegan shoes by Natalie Portman (and they're really cute, not just another celeb line).

I'm thrilled to try the new line of hair care products by Kate Hudson!

So I'm loving all the response from the men's style post! And it looks like it is on more than just the Style Muse's mind...Boston Globe online did a great piece, aptly named "Oh, no he didn't!".

How could I have missed my favorite faux pas of the pleated Khaki -- I can't tell you how many heated conversations I've had with guys about that one...and no, I don't care how much extra room they give you...

So needless to say there will be much more to come on Men's style!!! In the meantime I'm headed down-south for vacation...Hopefully my trip will be filled with inspiration!

All Things White

As the weather turns from what should be spring to full-on summer...my mind is on all things white!

This immediately makes me think of the never-ending question of “Can you wear white before memorial day or after labor-day??"

Regardless of what stylists have been saying, I was a strict supporter of the rule, must be the Puritan in me. But this year I've tossed my own rules to the wayside, because style is about marching to the beat of your own drummer (most of the time).

For those of you who thrive on rules and this still leaves you a bit befuddled -- my own drummer what? -- I'd stick to this: White can be worn year-round as long as you adhere to the appropriate fabric for the season -- like wool for winter, linen/cotton for summer and denim which is my idea of the 3-season suit. That said, try to use common sense, like, bright white top and bottom doesn't really work in early spring (I've tried it trust me) and in winter cooler "winter whites" seem to work best.

So what happens if you make a misstep with White? Nothing. As long as you bring a good dose of self-confidence you'll be fine.

Men's Style Part One

It has come to my attention that I need to devote more time and effort to men's fashion. I'll admit I find this task pretty daunting, where to start!!!

As I've said before, whether we like it or not style is how we present ourselves to the world. I've needed to remind myself of this on more bleary-eyed days than I can count. So I'm always a little bit in awe when I see a dapper-dressed man. Sure we see men that aren't afraid to be stylish in the media -- the era of grunge and hip-hop has given way to a slew of men that want to look good, just look at Justin Timberlake and Tom Brady. A tremendous example of the grown-up look was NKOTB (New Kids on the Block) on the Today show dressed in fashionable suits, quite the change from when they first came on the scene.

BUT what about the REAL world? In most cases this hasn't caught on to the masses quite yet! That being said, at my office we have the Scottish Style Invasion! As we all know, European men have never been afraid to show their style -- and I love it! Always work-appropriate but polished and fun at the same time, I think all men can take a page out of this book.

My hope is to get real men to share their secrets in the near future, but today It is just me! So here are a few things I think most women want to see...

Clothes that fit! Too big or Too small are Too much...

Just say NO to uber-designer jeans. We still want you to look like a man, Go Levis or even Diesel but leave the Sevens to the ladies...

But indulge in Luxe fabric...Let's face it, you're wardrobe is smaller and you most likely rotate more frequently, so invest in the coziest Cashmere and best qualities...

Aviators are just HOT...

Mix dressy and casual -- Jeans with tie and vest...

This may seem obvious, but no tank-tops ever...

And while we're at it, save the sweats for home...

Spring Clean Your Wardrobe

I've never been the most organized person. Add to that the number of items in my closet and lack of decision capabilities and my closet has been known to scare away friends and family. And I've tried, really I've tried to be clean the same way I try to be on time, and it just never seemed to work. Happily both of these things are changing with the help of SisterMuse2. After many reluctant attempts, I finally allowed her to go Oprah my ass! It was not pretty. Even when you think you've sent as many bags as humanly possible to the Salvation Army, I promise there is still more that will be ripped away.

It took a full weekend to get into working order, there were tears that led to therapeutic moments on the couch "what's wrong?" I was overwhelmed. All the disrespect I'd been showing my clothes was being thrown in front of my face -- and I've learned to never go back. As I enter another season it will be easier than ever to change over my wardrobe (something I'd never done before). Here are some of the difficult to learn things I've found the most useful -- And I hope that there is at least one person that can benefit from me showing my extreme naivete at clothes-caring.

1. Get the vacuum-sealed bags to put the majority of out-of-season clothes away. I never really understood the point of this, but having more room in your closet allows for easier access. I do tend to leave out a few items so that only colder evenings I can add in something unexpected like a turtleneck with shorts!

2. No matter how limited your storage space is, do not use the top shelf for stacked clothing. While obvious, it never really dawned on me how to solve the problem of the entire stack falling onto the ground. It is simple, find another place. Use the top shelf for clutches, headbands and other accessories.

3. And because I can't say it better myself look at this In Style article for tips on how to edit and rebuild your closet. It should be a fun experience, like shopping in your favorite boutique!

4. I cannot remember where I read this last tip (maybe Real Simple?), but I love it! Pull out 8 basic pieces, then 8 trendy pieces lay them out and mix/match outfits complete with jewelry, shoes etc. Here is the clincher -- snap photos of the outfits for easy reference when you are getting dressed.

Fabulous Finds for Skin

Call it the arrogance of the young, but like many things in my life, I'm just starting to get it. This also applies to the things I already knew like sunscreen, I am pretty sure I started taking that seriously when I turned 20; daily moisturizer with SPF when I turned 23. Now that I'm about to slam into 28, I've finally begun to understand the importance of a full skin care regime and have to wonder how much damage I've already done?

A few weeks ago I was at Trish McEvoy getting some new make-up. While I understand they try and peddle every serum under the sun, I knew she meant business after seeing her reaction after she asked if I used an eye cream (it reminded me of Mother Muse back in the day when I was frequently reminded that I "couldn't trick a tricker.") So I had to admit that my emphatic "yes" was more like occasionally dousing a little eye cream when I remember.

This woman was clearly seeing the bigger picture -- I wasn't getting it. So when she sent me on my way with a tote full of trial size products I became obsessed. When I'm looking through the magazines I actually read the skin care articles now and have found some great products for those of us that are just graduating into the "frig, I'm getting older" or "you want how much for an ounce?" groups of women (and men).

As a newbie the following are the most important additions to your skin care regimen -- eye cream, at-home peels, and moisturizer with SPF. With so many options it can be really easy to say the most expensive must be the best, but often that is not the case and is purely marketing.

For eye cream look for products that have collagen boosters like retinol, antioxidants like Vitamin C and peptides. The entire Muse family has been turned onto Dr. Wexler 3 in 1 eye cream as well as all her other products.

At-home peels and microdermabrasion, they sound a lot scarier than they actually are -- I hear it and think of Samantha in SATC, follow the directions and you won't notice a thing. Try Ole Henriksen, Murad or RoC from your local drugstore.

As for moisturizer -- I think this is a totally personal experience...Sister Muse1 likes La Mer but I'm allergic. I like L'Oreal Future E because it is light and easy on the wallet. In fact I like L'Oreal's products in general because they have the same owners and often use the same ingredients as Kiehl's and Lancome.

Oh and give it a few months, because if you are like me, there are years of damage control going down!

Transitional Clothing

I woke up this morning and went about my business getting ready when the most terrible thing happened! I opened my window to see snow gathering on my deck. It took my eyes a few moments to take in the scene because I dismissed winter at least two weeks ago and the first day of spring is tomorrow!!! HELLO, its EASTER!

This happens every year, I stubbornly decide its spring and Mother Nature laughs in my face. I put my frumpy puffer away in favor of a lighter suede trench only to freeze and catch a cold.

What's a muse to do???

Well coats and closed-toe shoes are still a necessity, but there are steps we can take to let Mother Nature know who's boss!

First, lose the dark nails, at least for a while. It is so LC (Lauren Conrad) anyway. Opt for a bright fun shade or neutral for those less daring.

Take baby steps towards letting go of some of the black that's been dominating your wardrobe by shifting to something gray then spice it up with a punch of color like a yellow cardigan or belt.

Probably the easiest way to achieve transition is with a scarf which will completely add life to a basic outfit. Old Navy has some great gauzy scarves (see above) that can be casually strewn on, looped, or put into a 1/2 knot. Or try out the new Boho trend with this great Forever 21 tie-dye scarf -- cheap and easy so when it is SO out next season you won't feel bad discarding.

Start small with accessories, jewelry and make-up and let the weather catch-up to you!

Mother of the Bride

Why is it so difficult to find an MOB (Mother of the Bride) dress? I've been looking high and low for an age appropriate dress that won't have Mother Muse looking like a Vegas Show-Girl that never had the chance to go to the prom!!! For example, perusing Nordstrom's Mother of the Bride section I came across this fab dress and I say fab for me! I mean on what planet does a boomer MOB want to wear this to her daughter's wedding? Conversely, I don't want Mother Muse to look matronly. Factor in budget, body-type and season and I know this quest is not for the faint of heart.

The race is on!

A Few of My Favorite Things

Perusing some of my favorite sites this afternoon (everyone deserves an afternoon tea break) and found this amazing flirty dress on a MAJOR sale!! Sadly the stylemuse is on hiatus from shopping at the moment, but all the better for my friends and family! I'm really enjoying the plethora of ruffles out at the moment. This dress from Kenneth Cole is a perfect bright -- but I would recommend buying a bigger size than the model is wearing (and definitely different shoes, try gladiator/metallic flats).

As I've said before, I'm sad that JCP has hit the mainstream mags and can only hope it doesn't jump the shark prematurely!! But I'm happy to report that there are some real finds right now. Get into the nautical theme with a ruffled stripe shirt (again not sure about this model's outfit).

And totally out of the blue, I found this amazing jewelry site Max & Chloe with the most ridiculous earrings ever!!! I have always loved Jem & the Holograms and with these I finally feel like I might get the chance!!! HA! Admittedly, these are a bit out there, but the site has great stuff from R.J Graziano and Kenneth Jay Lane in one convenient location!

Celebrities Are Just Like Us

I usually try to avoid the "If only I could look like her" in regards to the rich and famous. I try and remember it is their job and that they have a TEAM of people to help them look that way (and almost always when you bump into them at Whole Foods it is a disappointment).

Though, I was very moved by this photo of America Ferrara. She looks stunning, but in a very attainable way. The dress is beautiful in a regal eggplant (one of my favorite hues) and cinches at the smallest part of her waist,drawing attention away from other areas (I suspect the hips). The hair and make-up are done but in an all-American way (kill-me)! This looks should be an inspiration to us all. Got any evening weddings coming this spring?

Get Over Your Bad Self!

"Get over your bad self" is something the Mother Muse tells me frequently, and depending on the context can have all sorts of meanings, but for you today it just means I'd like us all to be free from the preconceived labels we give to certain stores. Just because its Arden B. doesn't mean it is cheesy, and Talbots does not have to mean your grandmother's Sunday best. By holding these notions, we severely limit some serious fashion triumphs! Not to mention, by rising above you'll avoid a fashion rut and leave everyone guessing where you scored the fabulous look.

Still don't believe me??? Well, if Target hasn't sold you on celebrity labels like Isaac and maybe Vera isn't enough to get you to Kohl's, consider this - many of the creative directors behind labels you love are actually not creating the pieces you're wearing.

For example, I bet many of you wouldn't buy Liz Claiborne but tote your Kate Spade proudly...Would you still if you knew that Kate Spade is no longer the creative force behind her brand?

Or would you still pooh-pooh Talbots if you knew the very well-respected Michael Smallbone was behind the brand (formerly of Anne Klein).

phew, ok I think I’ve made my point! You will never find all the things you want in one store, nor should you! A terrible fashion faux-pas would be to look like pg. 76 from a catalog...

So in the essence of sharing, here are a few of my favorite hidden gems:

JC Penney has stealthily built up its brand and now is in many of the mainstream fashion mags. Love the play jewelry and cheap summer dresses! (Check out the jacket above, so cute and just $40)

Victoria Secret has great selection on bathing suits and shoes

Talbots is totally under the radar on handbags, shoes and the occasional party dress. For all the lucky Boston girls -- head to the outlet in Hingham, best deals out there!

When all else fails try the usual suspects: Kohls, Target, H&M, Limited, Marshalls etc.

Where are the rest of your pants?

I recently had dinner with a dear old friend of mine and as we reminisced I realized how much I missed having his honest male opinion at my fingertips. Even today certain advice still rings true, so I've decided to share a bit with you all.

Capris have long-been in style. I remember this pair of light-pink Old Navy capris I'd paired with a cute black tube top and flip-flops -- "stylish and comfortable" my naive-self thought. My friend picked me up for the party and said "Where are the rest of your pants?" Just when I thought his criticism was finished he added ever-articulately, "And tube tops do nothing for girls, I don't know why they bother, they're so stupid."

With that I was finished! Before I even entered the door to the all-important high school soiree my confidence had been blown (although I'd never have him know it). While that night came and went, the poorly-timed advice has stayed with me -- as a general rule, capris and tube tops are not friends to the female form and will leave most men wondering where are the rest of your pants? (I've done a highly thorough audit of this opinion and find that it does hold true)

Am I suggesting you throw them out completely? Not necessarily, but just because J.Crew has displayed an impossibly cute model on its pages wearing a similar outfit does not mean it will work in the real world.

And while my male friend doesn't usually listen to me, he has no choice but to learn from me as well. Last time he came to visit, he sported the most hideous pair of "mandals" I've seen, so I took matters in my own hands and hid them from him before he left...for his own good.

The Superbowl of Fashion

Oh, how I love the Oscars! Let me count the ways -- 1. the Jewels 2. the Hair 3. the make-up 4. the dresses and 5. oh yeah, the little gold statues too! This year was somewhat disappointing -- No Vanity Fair after-party, No really star-making moments during the show and I still can't get over the fact Tilda Swinton won Best Supporting Actress -- but I digress.

Who got it right? And Who should fire their stylist? :) This year was not filled with many flagrant fashion missteps, but not many stood out from the pack either. The usual risk-takers were absent like Keira Knightley or Natalie Portman and their presence was missed. For example, Katherine Heigl (why was she there again) looked beautiful, everything just right, but she doesn't make my list. I'm so tired of her Old Hollywood Glamour bit. I like Glamour as much as the next person, but it is 2008 and I wish she would mix it up a bit.

So who did make the cut? I have a surprising choice for my #1 pick of Best Dressed this year -- It goes to Ruby Dee from American Gangster. She was flawless: perfect hair, make-up, jewels and dress. And they were all age appropriate which is no small feat!

Other toppers of the evening were:

Dresses: Cameron Diaz, Heidi Klum, Renee Zellweger

Hair & Make-Up: Jen Garner, Marion Cotillard, Kristin Chenoweth

You would think with the stylists, money and time the Red Carpet-brigade could hit the trifecta, but few made it happen.

Best Overall Goes to Penelope Cruz, Keri Russell, Miley Cyrus and Amy Adams (I'm a sucker for Red Hair/Emerald frock combo).

And... The Oh Dear! Awards: Jennifer Hudson, Diablo Cody, Tilda Swinton

My final thought from the event was DAMN you Hollywood stylists!!! In one evening they made sure that the one-shoulder look (which I adore) will jump-the-shark faster than you can say Tory Burch.

Dreamin' of Summer

A. Oh summer!! It seems to be on everyone's mind lately. I blame the resort collections cropping up all over the place. For those lucky enough to get away, and those that pin the bikini to the closet door for inspiration, beachy items are all over the place! For those that hit the latter category, I definitely suggest waiting a bit for items to go on sale. In fact, Banana Republic is having some decent sales on spring-like inventory including some great orange blouses which I love!

On to the question at hand, cover-ups! Oh how times have changed!!! When I was younger I would strategically wear cover-ups to hide parts I deemed unsightly, and sadly as the years press on, its more about covering up from the sun's harmful rays (and maybe still a bit of the former). Either way, I agree they can be hard to find. While there is always the ubiquitous Juicy Couture terrycloth sundress (and I do love terrycloth), for something a bit more grown-up try this J. Crew light-weight and summery cotton tunic. Or for something easier to get on and off, try a cover-up from Lands' End -- they have this great turquiose zip-up cotton number for just $28.50 http://www.landsend.com/.

A. As a well-endowed female myself, I've spent a lot of years addressing this issue much to my father's raised eyebrows. And after much trial and error, I've come to a few opinions on the way.

Sadly, for those of us with cleavage in practically everything, we must come to grips and admit that the stunning attire of Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is just not going to fly.

So my opinion is this: at the office, NO cleavage EVER. It is too much of a distraction to everyone around. However, on those summer nights out with friends -- show off your best assets, no matter what those assets might be -- but keep the rest demure like Scarlett Johansson instead you'll look like Pam Anderson.

Business Casual is Still Business!

Dear Style Muse, I just started a new job at a large company. The dress code is business casual, but on the more conservative/dressy side of the spectrum. I have my fair share of slacks, button down shirts and cardigans, but I wanted to see if you have any other ideas for work staples to look out for, or particular stores to visit, when I go spring shopping. Any advice you might have would be appreciated! Yours truly, D.C.

A. Oh have I struggled with this concept! You want to be respected, but you want to be comfortable. It sounds like you are on the right track in your wardrobe. The good news about business casual is that it allows for a bit of creativity, by pairing something more conservative with a few bold choices. For example, a fun dress belted and paired with a blazer and heels will take you from the office to drinks. Blazers also work well with jeans (not torn jeans but a tailored pair in dark hue). The easiest fail-safe advice on the business-casual front I can give anyone is to keep a client/meeting appropriate outfit at your office in case of emergencies.

As far as stores to look at -- it sounds like you are frequenting J. Crew, Banana Republic etc. --I'd add in some cheaper trendier counterpoints for layering with the basics: Zara and H&M as well as Nordstrom and other Dept. stores during their bi-annual sales.

As a last note, I think this is a good place to point out that nude-pantyhose are always a NO! When you can get away with it, go bare, and when you can't, match your stockings to your shoes.

Spring Updates

Question from a Curious Bee: Hey muse, If you could only buy five items (apparel, accessories, etc.) for Spring, what would they be? I need to update my wardrobe but need to keep it simple. Would love some fresh thinking from a Boston girl.

A. It is hard to narrow down to just 5 items, but I'll give a shot! The good news is a lot of styles from last season are carrying over this spring including bright colors and patent accessories. To keep it simple pick one of this season's trends and add with the basics you already have like a sheath dress or jeans!

1. Add a shot of color with a bright heel in a patent leather cherry red or a snakeskin kelly green -- I've been loving these Cole Haan heels:

2. I'm a big fan of the Safari look and with spring's finicky weather a light-weight safari jacket is not only essential but a great way to add in this trend.

3. In addition to Safari, the Bohemian look is back in a big way!!! Try accessorizing with natural looking necklaces and bangles in wood, cork and straw. Forever 21's accessories are so cheap you can afford a few and not feel guilty when they are laid to rest.

4. When I first heard about that florals were hitting the stores I had visions [read: nightmares] of my sister's Junior Prom dress from Laura Ashley!!! But after seeing the fresh take I'm in love! Try a floral blouse or skirt in a lighter fabric (to match the mood). I've seen some great multi-floral blouses at Zara (Open in Natick and coming to Newbury this spring) or grab a more beachy-take with Tibi's giant floral shirts and dresses out now.

5. Lastly, since I know this is Boston and neither an uber-trendy city, nor a vacation, I'd say go with a neutral-colored bag (bonus for woven leather) to take everywhere and with every trend!

Those are a few ways to get you started. There are a lot of different (sometimes conflicting) trends out there, so please use sparingly added to the basics you own, and remember just because Safari is in doesn't mean it goes well with the Florals you'll see out and about!

It’s a Man’s World

I definitely don’t believe that! but sometimes…

After yesterday’s post, I decided to muse a bit on the button-down shirt. I love the look, but the fit? It can be VERY difficult to say the least. Our anatomy is quite different then men, but yet many mainstream stores don’t quite get that chests come in all sorts of sizes. For this reason, more often than not, you’ll see me sport a button-down underneath an outfit to avoid the misshapen gap between buttons.

Not anymore! I’m tossing aside my cardigans and jackets! A friend of mine let me in on her secret and its brilliant! Take your button-downs to the tailor and have them add a little hook-eye on the inside between buttons – no more safety pins for me!!!

Saint Valentine

A friend of mine has asked what to wear for the big V-day! As long as it isn’t a first date (and honestly I’d try to avoid that if possible) you should have a bit of fun! We all know Valentine’s Day is a bit contrived, but I suggest going all out and getting into the act. Inspire a little romance with something flirty and feminine – black trousers with a ruffled top, a cozy knit wrap dress with killer earrings or the no-fail LBD (little black dress). Remind the guy why your worth the flowers and the chocolates. Go ahead and don flirty lingerie, spritz the sultry perfume, curl those lashes and enjoy the company of the one your with.

Musings on First Date Attire

My friend has a first date with a handsome fella tonight!!! Lucky for us we have innumerable experience in first dates (or maybe not so lucky?) Either way we’ve had some serious convos on what to wear on a first date, but for the longest time we never bothered to consult a male for his opinion. So while we think it doesn’t get sexier than a turtleneck and jeans (in winter) it turns out that many males don’t share our perspective. Over the course of many tragic first dates (anyone remember the broken foot fiasco) we’ve managed to compromise, because while it is important that the opposite sex finds you attractive – it is always more important that you think you are!!!

So here is the low-down from my male friend – a turtleneck conveys that the woman is “uptight” and can’t loosen up and enjoy herself. I see his point and think a compromise can definitely be achieved in the turtleneck category (3rd date).

Conversely, I will add that too-loose attire should be avoided for the obvious reasons -- like an interview, you want the person sitting across from you to be focused on you! So save the club attire for Vegas.

Now curiously a look that scored high with many of my male friends is the fitted button-down shirt and jeans (blazer optional). The guys like it because it gives an open-vibe while leaving enough to the imagination. Think Jennifer Aniston... (If button-down is not your thing a stylish blouse and/or jacket can achieve the same effect).

Like it or not, what we choose to wear speaks volumes to those around us (especially as a first/second impression). If you have a side of Rocker/Hippie/Preppie Chick save it for the conversation and not the outfit. The guy should have to work just a bit to figure out who you are…after all you don’t want to give up everything on the first date!!!

Madras is Timeless

Hooray! My first question...Boston Girl 26 asks:

"Style Muse - HELP! I am a classic prep but I realize it's time for me to update my look. How can I integrate a few hip pieces into my wardrobe?"

A: Well first off -- no Vera! ha just kidding :) Classic prep is a great look and you shouldn't feel the need to invest in crazy trends which will only make you feel like you are wearing a costume. That being said, if you dress in head-to-toe prep you will look like you are wearing a costume. For example a madras skirt can stand alone -- you do not need to double up the Ralph Lauren polos to go with it (or at all).

The most effective way to embrace trends is through accessories...Killer sunglasses, statement rings and necklaces, a great bag and shoes makes the sweater set and khaki combo fresh! The other key is to make sure things fit well, see a tailor regularly so that prep doesn't become matronly.

And remember to cut yourself some slack...you are in great company: Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn etc.

Style Muse vs. Vera Bradley

Friends of the Style Muse can attest that few things get me as riled up as a Vera Bradley bag...the very sight makes my blood go cold. After living in New England for many years I've had to concede two things to Ms. Vera Bradley: If you must carry a VB please limit it to the gym or a weekend away.

I'm not sure when this trend (I use the word loosely) took hold but it needs to be addressed. A cloth bag with bright matronly prints does not say style, it says "Grandma's Knitting Club." I think what gets under my skin the most is that I see the VB's carrying it around like a status symbol...It is a symbol of something else entirely.

Now as much as I do lust over M-A-J-O-R bags that Posh herself would carry, I do understand that many of us simply can't or won't spend that kind of money on a bag...Nor do you need to!

In my history of handbags (there have been a few) it wasn't the Gucci or Marc Jacobs that received the most googly eyed, must have gasps but a white PLEATHER tote bag from the Limited!!! For $50 bucks....

So while I know many of my friends will read this and disagree -- and while much of fashion and this blog are subjective....Please take my word on this: Leave the VB at home...

Hello!!! We all have those days that we just don’t care what we look like -- maybe because you were out last night and work came too early or you didn’t have enough detergent for laundry – but we always feel better when we put effort into the way we look.

There are a lot of challenges when it comes to looking good, for me it is frequently money, size, weather and what feels appropriate for the situation.
